How to enforce double opt-in email verification for gated content in Memberstack while maintaining passwordless login? Answered

Hi everyone,

I’m building a gated newsletter/articles community where profile registration = newsletter subscription.

I’m using passwordless login and want to implement a GDPR-compliant double opt-in process. My idea was to use Memberstack’s standard verification email as a double opt-in confirmation before granting users full access.

However, I’ve run into a challenge:

  • This doesn’t seem possible with Memberstack’s passwordless login.
  • If I rely on a newsletter tool for the double opt-in, users can still access gated content without confirming their subscription.
  • In many cases, once users log in and access the content, they ignore or forget the verification email, making the double opt-in meaningless.

My question:
Is there a way to enforce email verification at the Memberstack level, so users must confirm their email (via double opt-in) before accessing gated content? Or are there any best practices for combining double opt-in, passwordless login, and gated content effectively?

Thanks in advance for your advice and suggestions! 🙏

Hey Viktoriya Musiy, when we use passwordless login and signup, Memberstack marks the email as verified in order to avoid this redundant step which might not be needed for most cases.

So, you can provide signup and login option with password and have the email verification step to prevent users from accessing gated content right away after signup. In case passwordless is a better option for the project, you can have the new users sign up and assign them a plan which has more priority than any other plan on your site and set the plan redirect to an opt-in page which you can create as per your requirement where users can fill a consent form or opt-in form and you can add the necessary plan to them once they fill up this form which provides them access to the gated content. This is one way to go about it, where signing up won't give them immediate access but an intermediate step will be required to get assigned to the actual plan and resources. Hope this gives some idea.
