How to set up an invite-only community with Memberstack and Google login? Answered

Howdy, howdy! 😃

I'm just getting started with Memberstack as a potential solution for a project.

I'm curious if there's a way to set up communities so that they're invite only and with Google login.

My client would like a wiki for founders, and they would only let invited members in (so it's not the general open sign-up flow). Thank you so much for any ideas/help 💖

    Hey Waldo!

This should be totally possible 🙂

For the invite only part, is your client wanting a secret page that has a signup form, or do they want to manually create accounts themselves?

I think it would be more of a manual invite flow, thank you so much

    got it okay!

Essentially what you'll do is not place any signups forms on your website. That way nobody is able to signup by themself.

Your client would then manually create members in the dashboard.

We do have a passwordless feature that I think would work well here. It would look like this....

    1. your client wants to invite Bob
    2. your client goes to the MS dashboard, clicks Add Member
    3. they then enter bobs email and don't set a password for him (passwords are optional when you have passwordless enabled)
    4. client then sends an email to bob that says something like "You've been invited to my community! Click this link to go to my site." The link would need to go to a login page.
    5. bob receives the invite email and goes to the login page
    6. and bam! Bob is able to login, because the client created the account for him.

For google login, you can add the necessary form to your website that allows members to connect their google account - so subsequent logins can be made through google

Awesome, thank you so much Tyler Bell 👏

So to go the route of an invite flow, we have to move forward with an email login, first. Then thereafter they can connect their Google account?

    That's correct 🙂

Another option would be to have a secret signup form page - where your client could send a link to members they'd like to invite.

On a secret signup page you could have google available from the start.

Tyler Bell I like the secret signup page a lot 😀

Would we password protect that or just keep it unlisted/removed from sitemap.xml and such?

at the bare minimum you'd want it to be unlisted / removed from the sitemap 🙂

I'd personally start with that - if your client starts getting un-invited signups they could always go the password protected route.

Is there any information around sending notification to specific member tiers on a recurring basis, or are notifications primarily handled externally (for example: a summary of new content from the week prior gets sent out each Monday morning to members within specific tiers)

Definitely externally - memberstack would have to be connected to whatever you use to send emails, then you just send to that list every week
