[Wishlist] Integration: Paypal Planned

Post author
Duncan from Memberstack
1) The problem → I'm in a country where Stripe is not supported or credit cards are not widely used. (Croatia, UAE, Germany, Brazil, etc.). My pricing model requires one-time payments and basic recurring subscriptions.
2) Why is this important → I can't charge for my product or service without Paypal.
3) What will happen if this goes unsolved → I'll need to build something custom, manually manage/sync permission, or find another tool.
4) Possible solutions → Option to add Paypal to the checkout.

    Hi everyone!

Stripe recently added support for PayPal. At the moment they support most countries in Europe - and are quickly adding support for more.

If you’re interested in enabling PayPal payments for your business, please join the Slack community and DM Tyler Bell if the following items are true:

    • Your stripe account is based in a supported country (see pic)
    • You have a PayPal business account in the European Economic Area (excluding Hungary), the UK, or Switzerland (Stripe limitation)
We’re looking for a few folks that can help us do some testing

Could this be possible for this year?

This is something we will research in the coming months. We've received quite a bit of demand over the years, but need to check a few things before we can commit.

can you expound on this comment for me?
"A PayPal integration would be amazing :) We have a workaround currently, but without being able to modify memberships via JavaScript, it's not a great user experience and its very manual."
Would you mind breaking down the current user experience and what steps are manual for you? From there, I'll run this by the dev team to make sure the new API will support your setup. 🤞

At my previous company we got an amazing price with stripe and the way we got it was negotiating with Adyen, braintree and other gateways and playing their pricing off each other. We also had very large volumes.
Though I would say stripe was the best gateway ( we literally integrated all of them)

    Related.
Benny Steen: "However, we decided against using Memberstack because of the lack of payment method support.
In Europe, few people have a credit card, so we need all the payment options specific to each country that Stripe provides out of the box."

We definitely need this as well. We're leaving our current membership software Memberspace because they don't have any other payment processors other than Stripe. This is stopping a HUGE percentage of sales for us. We have customers all over the world that aren't able to sign up because they don't have access to credit cards.

My first note in here. PayPal needs to die so so badly. I would be a lot more interested in something really solid like Amazon pay or even just Authorise.net as an old timer.

One very cool thing I found out about Stripe, being in Canada this is very important. You can deposit USD into a USD Canadian Account.

Do you have any plans to develop an intagration with Paypal?
This is important to me because stripe is not supported in Brazil, we have more than 200 million people, it would be a nice market for you
There are a lot of business that need a membership area but this service here have expensive costs

As Stripe is already integrated i Memberstack, is it possible to “activate” their (local) payment methods like SOFORT, SEPA etc. ?
Im sure there are good reasons why its not available at the moment, but im just curious about it
What about this -> Is it possible to bypass the Payment Informations (Credit Card) when entering a lifetime coupon?
You could show a costum checkout button which says something like “Don’t have a credit card? Pay with X)” and collect payments trough it. Then you can send the costumer the coupon and he is on board.
It’s not sexy and can be very manual, but could be one way to get costumers at all.
What are your thoughts about it?

In my opinion PayPal is a big point and I am wondering why it isn't already implemented, i mean you can turn on iDEAL payment in Stripe but not PayPal? But yeah I don't know if it's that difficult to achieve technically.

I am from Germany and PayPal is just one of the most used payment methods in this country, like literally no one has a credit card here.

At the start of my first membership project i was struggling if I use Webflows Membership solution or Memberstack because Webflow offers PayPal for one-time payment Memberships. The only thing that they can not do at the moment is hiding/showing content based on the different Membership-Level but this feature is going to be implemented this year as far as I know.

And to be honest if that is implemented, I have to consider swapping back to Webflows solution even if I like Memberstack a lot.

David Mühlenweg This is excellent feedback!

We haven't implemented Paypal yet since it would be very complex (and it would add a lot of complexity to our product). That said, we have been experimenting with some a "lite" integration using a 3rd party tool like Make. It would require some additional setup work. Would you be open to a solution like that?

And are you needing a solution for one-off payments, subscriptions, or both?

Duncan from Memberstack thank you for the response.

I am open for any solution to be honest. In my case I need it for one time payments. So are there any docs available how to set it up with make? I haven't found anything despite this post: https://docs.memberstack.com/hc/en-us/articles/7406268771611-Is-It-Possible-to-Integrate-With-Another-Type-of-Processor-Not-Stripe- regarding the topic.

cc Julian Galluzzo How is your Memberstack + Paypal experiment going? 😁

Julian allowed me to take the project further, and I'm afraid I was unsuccessful. Too many dead ends. 😞

Looks like I would need a backend to get the latest version of paypal working. I'm not technical enough to get that working. And their new paypal.me links are too simple. Their old buttons don’t seem to be working properly… Sigh.

If anyone else is able to find a way, please let us know  🙏

Any updates on this? Stripe added PayPal support a while ago. Is this planned now?

David Mühlenweg They did add support, but not for connect accounts (which is what Memberstack customers technically are). We are waiting for them to enable this feature for us as well.

Quick little update... Before enabling Paypal in Stripe make sure you really want it. We are seeing customers disable Paypal but it remains in their checkout page and we cant disable it. We are trying to get Stripe to fix this.

Hi Josh-Lopez What to do if PayPal is enabled in Stripe as a payment method, but is not showing in the checkout as a payment option?
